"A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor." Prov 22:9 (NIV Bible)
A friend highlighted to us this verse while in the midst of sharing a meal with my hubby and I two nights ago. Our hearts were moved as he continued to talk about the plight of the poor in East Asia. I'm reminded again of how God cares and loves the poor, and abhors the oppression towards them for personal gain. "Don't rob the poor just because you can, or exploit the needy in court. For the Lord is their defender. He will ruin anyone who ruins them." (Prov 22:22-23)
While we may claim to be innocent of such exploitation, we often choose to ignore the needs of the poor who may be at our doorstep and around the world. Today, the startling fact remains that for more than 1.5 billion people around the world are living on less than a $1 a day. And more than 800 million people go to bed hungry every night, 300 million are children.
Friends, let's recall the heart-felt words of the Lord:
"For I was hungry and you gave Me (God) nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite Me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe Me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after Me.... I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me." (Mat 25:42-43, 45)
There is no excuse to neglect those who are in need. All it takes may be a simple act of kindness and mercy to someone today. We can begin to cultivate the heart of God towards the needy. So be blessed - "A generous man WILL BE BLESSED!"
